THE FOREST OF SANT’ANTONIO

Within its altitudinal limit, the Forest of Sant’Antonio, a Protected Nature Area of Local Interest that is included in the Pratomagno mountain chain, follows the principal ridge. Extending for about 900 hectares, it winds in a semicircle along the basin of the Resco torrent, at altitudes of between 600 and 1490 m a.s.l. The forest appears like an integral nature area, with woods of broad-leaved trees and summital open grasslands, which is important for the variety of the botanical species. As far as the fauna is concerned, the presence of wolves has been reported. The morphology is uneven, with steep slopes, prominent ridges, rocky crags, and deep ditches that flow together towards the Resco torrent. Various panoramic points offer wide views over the Valdarno and over the Chianti mountains.
Two ungarrisoned shelters are present in the area. These are furnished with a hearth, water and tables. There also various marked pathways, a teaching laboratory, and an equipped teaching path about 1.5 km long that is ideal for young school children and for families with infants.
