HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

The artistic and architectural patrimony of Reggello exhibits many points of interest.
Piazza Potente, with its late 16th-century porticos, the Town Hall [Palazzo Comunale], with the coats of arms of the podestas who succeeded one another over the years in governing the community, and the 16th-century Church of San Jacopo [St James] can all be admired in the very interesting main town
There are many churches to be visited: first and foremost, the Romanesque parish church of San Pietro [St Peter] in Cascia, where the Masaccio Museum of Sacred Art is located. It is here that Masaccio’s first work, the Triptych of San Giovenale, is conserved.
Just outside Reggello, in the Forest of Pratomagno, rises the Abbey of Vallombrosa with its Museum of Sacred Art. The Circuit of the Chapels can be travelled in ist environs. This walking itinerary touches on ten 16th/17th-century chapels that have been completely rebuilt, and which constituted an outpost of the Abbey .
There are numerous vestiges of castles in the territory, among which we can recall those of the Poggio alla Regina (or of the Castle of Sant’Ellero). In the vicinity of the hamlet of Leccio is the Castle of Sammezzano, which boasts an unusual Moorish-style architecture.
Several villas with gardens have considerable architectural importance (all of them are privately owned, and function as tourist accommodation structures). Examples of these are that of the Bonsi (see page on Farm-Holiday Facilities), Villa Pitiana (see page on holiday houses), or Villa di Mandri (idem).
Hannibal’s Bridge is worth recalling: today, this late-medieval stone crossing over the Arno river, is missing its central arch thanks to the 1966 flood.
Lastly, we would like to mention, located on Monte Secchieta, a monument to the soldiers who died in a clash with the Germans during the Second World War.
